Additional Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Once More, with Feeling Information

While the idea of infusing a weekly TV series with a Broadway musical ethos isn't exactly a new one--think Randy Newman's ambitious Cop Rock--it became something of a turn-of the-century television mini-trend. But few have reached as far--or succeeded--like this November 2001 episode of Fox Network's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Penned by series creator-producer Joss Whedon and performed by Sarah Michelle Gellar and cast, it's a loving, loopy musical pastiche that takes potshots at everything from Andrew Lloyd Webber to alt-rock. Paralleling the show's lovable pop culture tweaking, the musical styles here (the episode's musical conceit is a curse visited upon Buffy's hometown of Sunnydale) range from a patent footlight chorus of demons being interrupted by Gellar's hard-rocking stake thrusts on "Going Through the Motions" to Spike the Vampire's goth-metal complaint "Rest in Peace," with everything from parking tickets and mustard stain removal to climactic duels with the supernatural getting the Broadway send-up. Also includes strong orchestral score-suites from three other episodes, as well as Whedon and wife Kai Cole's demo for "Something to Sing About." --Jerry McCulley

What Customers Say About Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Once More, with Feeling:

You really have to be a die-hard Buffy fan to appreciate these songs completely, otherwise I can't see why anyone would laud them, given their show/character specific references and purpose. Still, it was a great show, and the season that this episode was done in and the point where each character was at at that time make the songs that much more meaningful. You really have to understand the characters to appreciate these songs- but they are all great to me.

I can't say enough of how much I loved the episode and this CD. I would not say I'm a fan of musicals, but this episode and CD made me believe. I listen to is a lot. I did not watch Buffy when it originally aired, I got into via HULU, then I had to get the Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set (40 discs). I would say that "Once More, with Feeling" is one of, if not, my favorite episode(s). On my way to work, to the store, road trips, etc. It's always readily available to get me in a great mood.If you're a Buffy fan, you got to get this CD(Even if you're late to the show like I am).

The cast of Buffy did a great job. There's 23 tracks; total time play, about 57.3 minutes.CD came with an 18 page booklet containing artwork and photos of the cast. It makes it nicer to listen to.In "What You Feel" the part where Dawn asked the demon if he's just bringing the fun in, is not there. Very pleased with the extra tracks not from the episode and the bonus track was neat. Buffy fans will like this CD. One track from each of these Buffy episodes; "Restless", "Hush", and "The Gift".By the way, it's great music to listen to while playing "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and/or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Chaos Bleeds". Wasn't sure I'd like it without sound effects but turns out I do.

For example there's no bottle smash sound in "Rest In Peace".

There are a few pages by Joss Whedon where he explains a bit about the musical, and the bonus track his wife and he did.

However, the part where she sings about how she doesn't want to be late, is in the song. The song "I've Got A Theory / Bunnies / If We're Together" has an ending to it, "If We're Together", that is nice and about a minute long.

I really like it.

Maybe because it was a spoken part.

Lyrics and the names of the characters who sing the lines are included.

Yes, the lyrics to "The Mustard" are there. There's no sound effects like in the show.

I don't recall it being in the show. There are three cool instrumental tracks, (two with some vocals), from other episodes.

Really; listening to the CD, and hearing Sarah Michelle Gellar singing "Going Through The Motions" or "Something To Sing About", while you're kicking some vampire butt is just cool.

But the voices are surprisingly decent, especially noting Sarah Michelle Gellar, Amber Benson, and Anthony Stewart Head (who we all knew could sing decently from earlier episodes). I love it when Anya belts out a rock hit about her irrational fear of bunnies. "Once More, With Feeling" is one of the top ten Buffy episodes ever created in my opinion. "Walk Through the Fire" is one of those classic Buffy moments and it always makes me tear up a little. It still makes me laugh. Being as the original cast sang these songs, I didn't expect very much. A strong album release for a strong episode. Totally recommended.

this episode was the longest i ever saw. the singing was bad and uninteresting. i thought it woudl never end. i love buffy but man that show was NOT meant to be a musical.
